Nevada Contractors Board Participates in Multi-State Sting Operation

(RENO, Nev.) – Using unlicensed contractors can be costly to homeowners and the Nevada State Contractors Board wants to protect you from becoming a victim.  In the past month, the NSCB participated in a multi-state sting to target individuals conducting online and electronic advertising and contracting without a license.  This month’s operation netted 10 busts in Nevada alone according to Jennifer Turner, Public Information Officer for the Nevada State Contractor’s Board.

She says unlicensed contractors put homeowners at risk by oftentimes using substandard material, lacking the proper insurance and avoiding paying taxes. In other words, if an  unlicensed contractor is injured on your property – you are responsible.

Turner says protect yourself by getting at least three bids, researching the contractor’s license number and company online and getting references.  She says while the bids up front may appear lower from an unlicensed contractor, it may cost you more money in the end.

The NSCB worked together with contractor boards from Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina and Utah, as well as the National Association of State Contractor Licensing Agencies. A spokesperson for the NSCB said that the agencies were coming together to address unlicensed contracting and to educate homeowners of the risks of using unlicensed contractors.

Detailed reports of participating states in the sting event can be found on NASCLA's website.
