Gov. Herbert Orders Anti-Idling Bill for State Vehicles

(SALT LAKE CITY) -- Gov. Gary Herbert announced Thursday plans to sign a bill that would require all 7,300 state vehicles to turn off their engines after 30 seconds of idling when not in traffic.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that the measure is designed to help reduce air pollution. Vehicles contribute about 40 percent of the air pollution, state environmental officials said.

Herbert estimates that the order will also save 60,000 gallons of fuel a year.
