Police Respond to Junior High Food Fight

(SALT LAKE CITY) -- West Valley City police responded to a Salt Lake City junior high school after students engaged in a food fight.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, two students got into a physical altercation that eventually escalated into a food fight. Nearly 600 students were in the cafeteria at the time.

A few hundred of the students were reportedly involved in the food fight, says the Tribune. The school was placed on lockdown while the police attempted to restore order.

No one was injured in the incident.

Authorities Investigating Man Who Fell to Death at Bridal Veil Falls

(SALT LAKE CITY) -- Police are investigating the death of a man who fell 200 feet at Bridal Veil Falls in Provo, Utah.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, no identification was found on the man, who was estimated to be between 40 and 50 years old. When the victim was found at the bottom of the Provo Canyon site Wednesday night, massive head injuries reportedly caused his face to be "unrecognizable."

The body was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office where an autopsy is underway, says the Tribune. Additionally, authorities are searching the scene for items or evidence that may help identify the man and determine what caused his fall.

Man Hospitalized After Early Morning House Fire

(SALT LAKE CITY) -- A house fire destroyed a Tooele home and critically injured a resident early Wednesday morning.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the fire occurred at about 3:50 a.m. on Wednesday, beginning in the rear of the home. A family of six was living in the home.

When firefighters arrived on scene, a 25-year-old man was still missing inside the home. The firefighters located him in the basement, unconscious but breathing, says the Tribune.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital before being flown to Intermountain Medical Center. He is reportedly in critical condition.

The house was completely destroyed by the blaze.

Police Searching for Man Who Robbed Bank

SLCDP(SALT LAKE CITY) -- Salt Lake City Police are looking for a man who robbed a Chase Bank Monday afternoon.

According to police, the man entered the Chase Bank, located at 290 South 1300 East, at approximately 2 p.m. He passed a note to the bank teller demanding money. The teller handed over some cash, and the suspect fled the bank on foot. He was last seen headed west.

He is described as a white male standing 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighing around 200 pounds. He wears glasses and may have red hair, though at the time of the robbery he was wearing a baseball cap. He was last seen wearing a sweatshirt that said “metro mix” on the front.

Police are asking anyone who knows the whereabouts of the suspect to call (801) 799-3000. Anonymous tips may be sent by texting TIPSLCPD plus information to CRIMES 274637.

Five Family Members Injured in Rollover Crash in Serious Condition

(SALT LAKE CITY) -- The five people injured in a rollover crash on Interstate 80 in Tooele County Sunday are in serious to critical condition, The Salt Lake Tribune reports.

The five people, three men and two women, were all family members.

Troopers believe that the driver, a 19-year-old female, fell asleep at the wheel of the Ford Explorer. The vehicle was thought to be traveling at nearly 90 mph when it drifted off the road at 6:30 p.m., just north of Grantsville, Utah.

Only one passenger, a 38-year-old female, was wearing a seatbelt. The three men, ranging in age from 20 to 25, were all ejected from the car. They were critically injured and air lifted to area hospitals. The two women, who were less critically injured, were taken by ambulance.

Man Hit by Semi-Trailer Expected to Recover

(SALT LAKE CITY) -- A man who was struck by a truck on Interstate 80 early Friday is expected to recover from his injuries.

The victim was driving a small pickup truck at about 2:30 a.m. on Friday, when he stopped in the right lane and got out of the vehicle, says the Salt Lake Tribune. The man was sideswiped with the side-view mirror of a semi-trailer.

According to the Tribune, the victim was taken by ambulance to Delle, Utah, and was later taken to University Hospital in Salt Lake City. The man was listed in serious condition, but was communicating with paramedics.

The driver of the semi-trailer was not hurt.

SWAT Officers Use Tear Gas to End Standoff

(SALT LAKE CITY) -- A standoff between SWAT officers and an alleged burglar ended Thursday morning after the officers used tear gas to apprehend the suspect.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the standoff began at approximately 7 p.m. on Wednesday after residents in an apartment complex reported that a man had broken into their apartment and threatened them. The intruder reportedly told the couple that he had a handgun.

The suspect refused to surrender to officers, and when negotiations with SWAT failed, the officers released tear gas canisters. The Tribune reports that the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

No injuries were reported in the standoff.

Later, police discovered the suspect did not have a weapon. He was booked on charges of first-degree aggravated burglary.

Police: Driver Who Hit Three Girls in Crosswalk was Texting

(MIDVALE, Utah) -- Police say the driver who sent three young girls to the hospital after hitting them while they were using the crosswalk was texting, according to the Salt Lake City Tribune.

Around 3:40 p.m., the girls, ages 9, 10, and 14, used the crosswalk near 700 W. Wasatch Street while on their way home from school.

That’s when the 28-year-old driver of a Mazda Protégé drove through the crosswalk, hitting all three girls.

The 9-year-old was the most seriously injured, and was taken to Intermountain Medical Center with critical head injuries. She has since been upgraded to fair condition, and transferred to Primary Children’s Medical Center. The 10 and 14-year-olds were also taken to IMC for treatment of serious injuries that have since been upgraded to minor.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said the driver was uninjured, and was cooperating with the police. He is believed to have not seen the crosswalk or the girls because he was sending a text message.

"It’s a very sad reminder that texting while driving is extremely dangerous,” Hoyal said.

Police Catch One of Two ‘Suspicious’ Men Following Foot Chase

(SALT LAKE CITY) -- Police caught one of two men found suspiciously going through back yards in Salt Lake City following a foot chase on Monday.

Officers received a call about the two men around 10 a.m. When they arrived at the residence on South Dearborn Street, police attempted to contact the two men for questioning, but they ran away.

Police chased after the two men, and though one was able to elude them, officers were able to catch 32-year-old Clinton Duncan.

Duncan was booked into jail on outstanding arrest warrants and several charges, including fleeing from an officer.

DNA Evidence Identifies Human Remains Found a Decade Ago

(SAN BERNADINO, Calif.) -- On Friday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department announced that it had used DNA technology to identify human remains found a decade ago as a missing Salt Lake City woman.

Charlotte Mower disappeared in 2001. Mower, who was 36-years-old when she disappeared, was last seen crossing a street in Salt Lake City. She was reported missing by her sister in October 2003, according to Salt Lake City police.

In February 2003, human remains were found in the town of Needles, Calif. Over ten years later, improvements in DNA technology allowed officials to confirm that the body is that of Mower.

The SLCPD says that Mower’s case is listed as active with the cold case unit of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office.
