(SALT LAKE CITY) -- Salt Lake City Police closed a 30-year-old murder case after the suspect has died.
Dennis Piernick was found stabbed to death on May 16, 1982, at his apartment located on E. South Temple. As police investigated the case over the years, they said leads dried up as some people were afraid to come forward with information.
Officials said in September 2011 a new investigator found that Rodney VanKomen, age 17 at the time, had confessed to a friend that he committed the murder. Investigators said there is also evidence linking VanKomen to the killing. However, VanKomen died in a vehicular crash in 2005, leaving police unable to charge him with the murder.
