Gas Leak Causes Evacuations Near Moscone Center

(SAN FRANCISCO) -- A gas leak near the Moscone Center on Sunday slowed traffic and forced hundreds of people to evacuate their homes and businesses.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the leak was reported just after 12 p.m., near the intersection of Fourth Street and Folsom Street. Officials say that the leak was caused when construction workers accidentally cut a Pacific Gas and Electric Company gas line. Workers arrived on scene Sunday to dig below the street to shut off the line, completing that task shortly before 3 p.m.

Between 300 and 400 people were evacuated from the area, so that crews could shut off the leak and avoid a fire or explosion.

Police Arrest Seven at Protest

(SAN FRANCISCO) -- Police arrested seven people at a former community garden called the Hayes Valley Farm who were protesting a planned housing development.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, police officers arrived at the scene and ordered 55 people to leave. All but five of the protesters left without incident. Two were arrested peacefully and three were removed from platforms in trees.

The five arrested on site were charged with suspicion of trespassing and disorderly conduct. Two additional people were arrested outside of the camp on suspicion of disorderly conduct, says the Chronicle.

The protest was staged after a plan was announced to turn the community garden into a 282-unit housing complex. More than 100 of those units will be affordable for low-income residents.
