Cops Warn of Utility Bill Payment Scam

(SAN FRANCISCO) -- San Francisco residents are being warned about a recent series of scams, in which scammers demand money, falsely claiming that it's for the payment of utility bills.

San Francisco Police say the scam involves suspects contacting residents by phone, claiming to be representatives of PG&E or the San Francisco Water Department, and demanding payment for overdue bills. The suspects reportedly tell victims that their bills are overdue and their service would be terminated within the hour unless payment is received.

Victims are asked to obtain a Money-Pak from a store, and then instructed to call the suspects back and read out the Money-Pak account number, which gives the suspects access to the money.

Police say both utility companies have confirmed that the calls are fraudulent, as neither company requests payment in that manner.
