Agreement Reached for Overseas Voters to Take Part in Calif. Primary
(WASHINGTON) -- An agreement has been reached between the Justice Department and California state officials to ensure that military personnel, their family members and other U.S. citizens residing abroad are able to vote in the upcoming California primary on June 5.
The agreement comes as the Justice Department filed suit against the state for failing to send absentee ballots to eligible foreign-based California voters for the primary at least 45 days prior to the election, as required by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act.
The agreement will see California's Secretary of State providing remedial options to afford affected military and overseas voters sufficient opportunity to receive, cast and return their ballots in time to be counted.
