According to regatta officials in a statement on Tuesday, the race, which begins July 5, will use the same type of boats involved in the accident that killed Olympic medalist Andrew “Bart” Simpson.

The boats, 72-foot-tall double-hulled catamarans, or AC72 boats, are extremely fast, and are more comparable to an aircraft wing than traditional sails. They also have a reputation for being somewhat more unwieldy and dangerous.

The winning team of the race gets to select the location and type of boats used in the next race. They are sticking with AC72 boats instead of switching to 45-foot catamarans, generally regarded as safer.

A full review of “the safety of training and racing” is being conducted by a team of experts, however, to determine what caused the fatal accident and make sure the rest of the race is safe.

A one week halt to training was instituted as a “grace” period following Simpsons’ death.
