SF Archbishop Steps Down; Oakland Bishop Named Successor
(SAN FRANCISCO) -- Catholic Church officials have named a new archbishop to oversee the Archdiocese of San Francisco on Friday, reports ABC affiliate KGO-TV.
The Rev. Salvatore Cordileone was named archbishop by Pope Benedict XVI after the resignation of Archbishop George Niederauer.
Cordileone, formerly a bishop of Oakland, was also stationed for a time in San Diego as an auxiliary bishop.
Niederauer, 76, has been archbishop of San Francisco since December 2005.
