Jets' Santonio Holmes Out for Season

Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images(FLORHAM PARK, N.J.) -- New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes will be out the remainder of the 2012 season after he suffered an injury in Sunday's loss to the 49ers.

The Jets confirmed Holmes was diagnosed with a Lisfranc foot injury on Wednesday.  This is the second Jets player in less than two weeks sidelined for the season. Jets all-pro cornerback Darrelle Revis was the first, last week.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan realizes that injuries happen in football and you have to play with what you are dealt.

"We just have to get better and we will," Ryan said on Wednesday.  "How many people are going to feel sorry for the New York Jets?  I know the answer to that, nobody."

The team signed veteran wide receiver Jason Hill to take over for the much-needed roster spot.  Hill had 25 receptions for 367 yards and three touchdowns for the Jaguars last season.

The Jets will play the Texans on Monday night football this week.

Athletics Edge Rangers, Tie for First in AL West

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(OAKLAND, Calif) -- The Oakland Athletics defeated the Texas Rangers 3-1 on Tuesday night, moving into a tie for first place in the American League West with one game remaining.

Athletics pitcher Travis Blackley allowed one run over six innings to earn the victory for Oakland (93-68). Johnny Gomes hit a solo home run for Oakland.

After clinching their first playoff berth since 2006, the Athletics will have a chance to win the AL West when they face the Rangers Wednesday night in the final game of the regular season.

The winner will win the AL West, while the loser will play in the wild-card game on Friday to earn the right to advance to the division series.

The Athletics erased the last piece of what had been a 13-game deficit in the division race on June 30 to take a share of first place for the first time since March 29.

Wednesday night's finale features A.J. Griffin of the Athletics against Matt Harrison of the Rangers, with the winner taking it all.

Dodgers Eliminated from Playoff Contention

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers fell to the San Francisco Giants 4-3 on Tuesday night, eliminating themselves from playoff contention.

This was a must-win game for the Dodgers, who entered the night one game behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild-card spot in the National League.  The Cardinals lost, so the Dodgers needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Dodgers were known for the flurry of in-season moves they made to improve their roster, acquiring first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pitcher Josh Beckett, outfielder Shane Victorino, and infielder Hanley Ramirez.  Despite the added talent, the team still fell short of their goal.

"Everything kind of comes to a screeching halt," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "To not have that opportunity to move forward is painful."

Buster Posey and Joaquin Arias hit home runs for the Giants to help pitcher Barry Zito earn his seventh straight decision.

The St. Louis Cardinals will travel to Atlanta on Friday in a one-game playoff to determine which squad advances to the Divisional round.

Yankees Top Red Sox in 12 Innings, Control Own Fate

Robert Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The New York Yankees came back to defeat the Boston Red Sox 4-3 in 12 innings on Tuesday night behind a strong showing from Raul Ibanez.

Down 3-1 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Ibanez pinch-hit for designated hitter Eduardo Nunez and hit a game-tying two-run home run and sent the game into extra innings.

"We stuck together. We stayed after them, and we were able to pull it out," Ibanez said. "It's crunch time for us, and we all know that."

In the bottom of the 12th inning, Ibanez hit a walkoff RBI single to win the game for the Bronx Bombers.  This was one of the most important wins of the season for the Yankees.  It allowed them to maintain their one-game lead over the Baltimore Orioles in the race for the American League East division title.

The Orioles defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 1-0 on Tuesday night to remain one game back of the Yankees.

David Phelps went five and one third innings for the Yankees, giving up two runs on three hits.

This was the first win of the season for the Yankees when trailing after eight innings of play.

The Yankees control their own playoff fate.  A win Wednesday night over the Red Sox would give the Yankees the AL East crown as well as home-field advantage throughout the American League Playoffs. If the Yankees lose and the Orioles win, the teams will play a one-game playoff on Thursday to decide the AL East champions.

Adam Greenberg Makes Return to MLB

Marc Serota/Getty Images(MIAMI) -- Mike Greenberg made his return to Major League Baseball Tuesday night when the Miami Marlins signed him to a one-day contract.

The contract was a second chance for a player who never got much of his first chance.

Greenberg was last in the majors with the Chicago Cubs in 2005, but in his lone plate appearance he was hit in the back of the head with a fastball, a moment that put a huge damper on his career.

In his at-bat against the New York Mets in the sixth inning, the 31-year-old struck out on three pitches pinch-hitting against New York Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey.

"It was magical," he said. "The energy in the stadium was something I never experienced, and I don't know if I will ever experience it again. You could just feel the genuine support. It was awesome."

Greenberg was last in the majors in 2008 with the Los Angeles Angels.  He played in independent baseball leagues from 2009-2011.

Brad Keselowski Focused Headed Into Talladega

Patrick McDermott/Getty Images for NASCAR(NEW YORK) -- The race for the Sprint Cup championship will be headed to Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday in the fourth stop of the chase.

Brad Keselowski won last weekend's race at Dover International Speedway and enters the weekend atop the points lead, five points ahead of the five-time Sprint Cup champion, Jimmie Johnson.

"It's easy for me not to get too high emotionally knowing that there are still seven races left," Keselowski said when asked his thoughts of possibly winning the championship. "We're not even a third of the way through this. That's a long ways to go."

Keselowski has won two races at Talladega and is more concerned about avoiding crashes at the Talladega track with the restrictor-plate races on hand this weekend.

"I guarantee you that everybody that runs in the back at Talladega is running around going, 'Man I hope (the drivers ahead) wreck,''' Keselowski said on Tuesday. "That's what they're thinking. It's really mean spirited in the back. But that's what you're thinking the whole time."

Defending Sprint Cup champion, Tony Stewart sits in fifth, 32 points behind Keselowski and has one win at Talladega.

"You can race your guts out for 188 laps and not accomplish anything," Stewart said of all the crashes that occur at Talladega. "Guys are smart to either try to position themselves in the front of the field and, hopefully, try to stay ahead of when that big wreck happens or they take the cautious approach because it really doesn't matter what you do those first 180 laps, you aren't going to drive away from the field."

Lakers' Dwight Howard practices for First Time

Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images(EL SEGUNDO, Calif.) -- The Los Angeles Lakers biggest offseason acquisition practiced for the first time, after having back surgery five months ago.

Dwight Howard was back on the court with his new team on Tuesday, but has been ruled out for their first game on Oct. 7.

"Hopefully, I'll be back for some preseason games," Howard said. He wants to play in one or two preseason games. "I think we're going to need it for chemistry and all that stuff. But, like I said, I'm not going to rush it. I'm going to continue to practice. We've had some great practices. Today was really good, so I'm happy."

Howard was on the court with Paul Gasol, Kobe Bryant, and Steve Nash, the four players who Lakers fans hope can bring back another championship to Los Angeles.

"We can only go by time right now and see how I feel after practice. We're not in a rush. These guys need me for the whole season, not a couple preseason games."

For Lakers coach Mike Brown, having these four on the court are the least of his problems, it's getting Howard ready for the regular season.

"Whenever he's ready, he'll be ready," Brown said. "It's our trainers' jobs. Our trainers do a terrific job of it. They're out here the whole practice and if they feel they need to pull him out of it, they'll pull him out."

Report: Jets Fear Santonio Holmes Out For the Season

Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Already down their best defensive player for the rest of the season, the New York Jets may be without arguably their best offensive player. According to a report from Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, the team fears that Holmes will miss the rest of the 2012 season with a foot injury.

Holmes went down during the team's game against the San Francisco 49ers over the weekend.

"I'm not sure how many weeks he'll be out, the real extent of the injury," Jets head coach Rex Ryan said. "We know the X-rays were negative. That's good news. Obviously, it looks doubtful for this week."

Holmes is one of the few explosvie playmakers the Jets have on offense, and was relied on heavily  before suffering the injury. In 2012 he has caught 20 passes for 272 yards with a touchdown.

The team is not expected to sign free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who played with the Jets last season.
