Kansas Signs Basketball Coach Bill Self Through 2022

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(LAWRENCE, Kan) --  The Kansas University Jayhawks and head men's basketball coach, Bill Self,  have agreed to a restructured contract that will keep him on the sideline at Allen Fieldhouse through the 2021-2022 season.

Self, who will make $3.857 million per season had a previous deal which was set to run through the 2018 season.

The Jayhawks are coming off a loss in the NCAA Tournament Championship game to Kentucky, his second appearance with Kansas in the Final Four.  Self also led them to the 2008 National Title.

Kansas has also won a record eight consecutive Big 12 regular-season titles under Self and average close to 30 wins per season.

If Self remains the head coach through the 2022 season, he is guaranteed to make over $53 million.  There are also bonuses for winning tournaments, and of course the prestigious National Championship.

"I can't imagine myself coaching anywhere else as long as the people at Kansas want me to be here," Self said.

John Wall To Miss Eight Weeks with Right Knee Injury

NBA Via Washington Wizards(WASHINGTON D.C) -- Washington Wizards star point guard is expected to miss eight weeks of play with a stress injury in his right knee, the team announced Friday afternoon.

Wall was experiencing pain and discomfort in his right knee while getting ready for Wizards' training camp.  An MRI revealed the early stages of a non-traumatic stress injury to that leg.

Surgery will not be required and Wall is expected to return to action in late November.

“My teammates and I are all excited to build on the improvement we made at the end of last season, and I know they will continue to make great progress while I get through this setback,” Wall said. “I will work extremely hard to make sure I get back as soon as possible so I can re-join them and help our team continue to improve.”

He is expected to miss roughly the first 15 games of the 2012-2013 regular season.

The third-year pro has career averages of 16.3 points per game, 8.2 assists, and 4.6 rebounds.  He was selected No.1 overall by the Wizards in the 2010 NBA Draft.

NBA Finalizing Flopping Procedures

Patrick McDermott/Getty Images(ELIZABETH, N.J.) -- The NBA has had enough of watching its players flop on the court. NBA spokesman Tim Frank said on Thursday that the league is finalizing procedures to help eliminate flopping on the court.

Flopping is the act of, or some would call the art, of falling down and drawing a foul when very little or no contact was made. This is to trick officials into calling the fouls, which can help swing momentum during a game.

Commissioner David Stern feels that flopping has become a big problem in the NBA, and he wants to put a stop to it. Part of the procedure might involve a post-game review of the play by the league office. No infraction would be called during the game, but a player would likely be fined for committing the act.

"If you continue to do this, you may have to suffer some consequences," Stern said during the NBA Finals. "What those exactly should be and what the progression is, is to be decided, because ... we want to put a stake in the ground that says this is not something that we want to be a part of our game."

The anti-flopping procudures could go into effect as soon as this upcoming season.

Red Sox Name Jason Varitek Special Assistant to the GM

L. Redkoles/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- One of the most popular players to wear a Red Sox uniform in recent years is coming back to the team. Former catcher Jason Varitek has been named a special assistant to general manager Ben Cherrington.

Varitek has no front office experience, but there are some who feel that this is the start of a long career with Red Sox management. Some members of the Boston media think that Varitek could eventually become the team's manager or rise up the front office ranks.

"He will be involved in a number of areas," Cherrington said in a statement. "Including major league personnel decisions, evaluations, and mentorship and instruction of young players. We are fortunate to have him in this role."

The 40-year-old spent 15 total seasons with the Red Sox. He was a key member of their World Series teams in 2004 and 2007, and was always commended for his leadership and intangibles.

During his career with the Red Sox, Varitek hit .256 with 193 home runs and 757 RBIs.

A's Brandon McCarthy to Consider Using a Helmet on Mound

J. Meric/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- It's been a little over three weeks since Oakland Athletics pitcher Brandon McCarthy suffered a fractured skull after getting hit in the head by a line drive. As he contemplates his baseball future, McCarthy is open to wearing a helmet on the mound.

Back on September 5 against the Los Angeles Angels, McCarthy was nailed in the head with a line drive. Since then, McCarthy has continued to make progress in his recovery.

"I'm all in favor of innovation," McCarthy told Susan Slusser. "And if in 50 years, every pitcher is wearing some sort of soft-shell helmet that looks different, that will be all right. But I don't want it to be mandatory."

Before getting injured, McCarthy was one of the Athletics best pitchers. In 18 starts, McCarthy went 8-6 with a 3.24 ERA.

He has expressed optimism that if the team makes the playoffs, he will be able to travel with the team. Though, he would not pitch for them again until next season.

Washington Upsets 8th Ranked Stanford

Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images(SEATTLE) -- The Washington Huskies (3-1) scored with 4:53 left in regulation, giving them the lead and the 17-13 upset victory over 8th ranked Stanford.

"I'm proud of our kids," Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian said."I knew this was a different group...I had that feeling...serious group. We knew this was going to be a four quarter game, and we made some plays on fourth down that were really critical."

They sure did. Trailing 13-3 late on the last play of the third quarter, running back Bishop Sankey rushed for a 61-yard touchdown on fourth-and-1. Then on the game-winning touchdown drive, Dezden Penny ran for two yards on another fourth-and-1, leading to Keith Price's 35 yard touchdown pass to Kasen Williams.

As for the Cardinal (3-1), it was held without an offensive touchdown for the first time since Oct. 2007.

"We didn't play well enough to win," Stanford head coach David Shaw said. "We didn't make the throws we need to make. We didn't make the catches we need to make. We didn't sustain our blocks in the running game as long as we should have. We got outplayed tonight."

Ravens Stop Browns, 23-16

Rob Carr/Getty Images(BALTIMORE) -- Joe Flacco threw and ran for a touchdown, while throwing for 356 yards, leading the Baltimore Ravens (3-1) to a 23-16 win over the Cleveland Browns (0-4).

"Hats off to our players," Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said after the game. "It's tough to win in this league. Sometimes your going to win and your going to look great doing it in one phase, or two phases or all three phases. And sometimes your going to win and it's not going to look great. But you got to find a way to win anyway."

The Cleveland Browns had two desperation chances to throw the ball into the end zone at the end of regulation, but weren't able to complete either.

"A game like this comes down to a play or two," Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said. "I think we can look throughout the game, especially in the second half, and we can all point to a play or two that made the difference in a seven point game."

As for the return of the original officials, things went smoothly, and no controversial calls were made.

Bills RB Fred Jackson Expected Back for Sunday's Game

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images(ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.) -- Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said Thursday that, barring a setback, running back Fred Jackson should play in Sunday's game versus the New England Patriots.

Jackson, who has missed the team's last two games after spraining his knee in the season opener, has made it through back-to-back practices.

"Fred worked and worked well today (Thursday), and there didn't seem to be any residual affect negatively from yesterday," Gailey said.

While Jackson should be back, running back C.J. Spiller, who injured his shoulder in last week's victory over the Browns, is less likely to take the field Sunday.

Spiller was a limited participant in practice on Thursday, and while he hasn't been ruled out of Sunday's game, he is more likely to come back next week.

Kellen Winslow Jr. Released by Patriots

Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images(FOXBOROUGH, Mass.) -- Kellen Winslow's time as a New England Patriot was short. The 29-year-old tight end, who signed a one-year contract with the team Sept. 19, asked for his release and the Patriots granted his wish.

Winslow, who was brought in after tight end Aaron Hernandez went down with an ankle injury during Week 2, had one catch for 12 yards in his only game as a Pat.

Winslow has chronic knee pain, which may have been a factor in his decision.

The Patriots still have tight ends Rob Gronkowski, Daniel Fells and Michael Hoomanawanui on the roster, and New England hopes to get Aaron Hernandez back in a couple of weeks.
