Akers Keeps Job as 49ers Kicker

David Welker/Getty Images(SANTA CLARA, Calif.) -- David Akers will be the San Francisco 49ers' kicker for their Saturday night NFC divisional playoff matchup with the Green Bay Packers.

The decision was announced by 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh after practice Thursday.

San Francisco signed kicker Billy Cundiff on Jan. 1 because Akers had struggled this season, only making 29-of-42 field-goal attempts.

Still, Akers has a good track record. In his 15 NFL seasons he has hit 81 percent of his field-goals, and has kicked in six NFC championship games.

"We feel confident in David giving us the best chance to win," Harbaugh said. "[Cundiff] has none a nice job. David's done a better job and is more prepared to give us the best chance to win."

Even with Akers winning the job, Harbaugh says Cundiff will stay on the roster.
