American League Takes All-Star Game

Elsa/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The American league took Major League Baseball's mid-summer classic, 3-0 over the National league, on Tuesday night at Citi Field in Queens, New York.

Matt Harvey (New York Mets) started for the National League in his home park. The right-hander went two scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out three.

Jose Bautista (Toronto Blue Jays) opened up the scoring in the top of the fourth inning with a sacrifice fly that scored Miguel Cabrera (Detroit Tigers). The American League struck again in the top of the fifth, with J.J. Hardy's (Baltimore Orioles) fielder's choice that scored his Oriole teammate, Adams Jones. Jason Kipnis (Cleveland Indians) rounded out the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the 8th inning, knocking in catcher Salvador Perez (Kansas City Royals).

The night was highlighted by a standing ovation for New York Yankee reliever, Mariano Rivera, who is playing out his final season before retirement. The Yankee closer entered the game in the 8th inning, recording a clean inning and earning the game's MVP honors.

Rivera was one of ten American League pitchers that contributed to the three-hit shutout.

Chris Sale (Chicago White Sox), notched the victory. Joe Nathan (Texas Rangers) recorded the save.
