Athletics Stay Alive, Shut Down Tigers 2-0

Ezra Shaw/Getty Images(OAKLAND) -- Brett Anderson, who hadn't pitched since Sept. 19 when he suffered an oblique injury, threw six scoreless innings for the Oakland Athletics, leading the A's to a 2-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers in Game 3 of their ALDS series, saving them from playoff elimination.

The Athletics, who now trail the best-of-five series 2-1, got on the board early when outfielder Yoenis Cespedes singled off Tigers' starter Anibal Sanchez in the first inning, scoring Coco Crisp.

"It was good to get off to a nice start," Athletics manager Bob Melvin said. "Good starting pitchers you try to get to them before they get into their rhythm. We were able to do that, even though it was only one run, with Sanchez because he had good stuff tonight, and mixed his pitches very well."

Although Sanchez took the loss, he pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-run ball while striking out three.

The Tigers will send Max Scherzer to the mound Wednesday, to try once again to eliminate the A's. He will be opposed by rookie A.J. Griffin.
