Benford Hired as New Coach at North Texas

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Marquette University Associate head basketball coach Tony Benford has been hired as the new North Texas head coach.

There is a news conference scheduled Wednesday at 2 pm, where it is expected Benford will sign a five-year deal.

Benford takes over the reigns from Johnny Jones, who left the program to become the head coach at LSU. Jones compiled a 190-146 record through six seasons at North Texas.

Benford was a finalist for the SMU job that went to Larry Brown. SMU had talked to Benford about being part of Brown's staff and be a coach-in-waiting.
