Blaine Gabbert Named Jaguars Starting QB

Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images(JACKSONVILLE) -- He may be hurt, but Blaine Gabbert was still named the Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback by head coach Gus Bradley Monday.

Gabbert will miss the rest of the preseason with with a hairline fracture in his right thumb, but Bradley is hoping the 23-year-old will be ready for the team's first game of the regular season. Gabbert will wear a protective brace until the finger is healed

"Normally a break would require surgery or six to eight weeks,'' Bradley said. "It's not the same with this injury. They feel like in two weeks he should have a chance to come back and begin his prep for Kansas City.''

Gabbert was in competition with veteran Chad Henne for the starting job.

In two preseason games, Gabbert completed 18 of 26 passes for 184 yards and a touchdown. In those same two games, Henne completed 12 of 21 passes and threw two interceptions.

“He has command on what we’re looking to get done,” Bradley said when talking about the decision. “Blaine has earned this opportunity and the entire organization is excited about his growth and we will strongly support him.”

During his first two seasons in the NFL, Gabbert has played in 25 games, completing 53.8% of his passes for 3,876 yards, 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.
