Cardinals' Rafael Furcal Suffers Injury Setback

Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Rafael Furcal is battling injuries before the season has even begun thanks to an elbow injury.

Furcal had hoped to make his spring training debut on Sunday but instead learned he'll have to stay on shelf for the foreseeable future. He has been told to refrain from baseball activities.

He had opted to rehab a torn ligament in his elbow rather than undergo Tommy John Surgery. According to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Furcal began experiencing discomfort in his right elbow a couple weeks ago.

"What do you want me to do?" Furcal said over the weekend. "It's not getting better. I wish I could do whatever I could to make it better, so I could play. It's very disappointing. I tried to push it a little harder. We'd better back it up a little bit because I feel more pain."

Furcal missed 41 games last season and after a hot start to 2012, he cooled off and hit just .264 with the team last season. Pete Kozma and Ronny Cedeno are likely to replace Furcal at shortstop.
