Chase Headley Breaks Thumb

Jason Wise/MLB Photos via Getty Images(PEORIA, Ariz.) -- San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley broke his left thumb and will miss at least the first two weeks of the MLB season.

Headley injured the thumb while sliding into second base in an attempt to break up a double play Sunday.

"Injuries occur. You hate to see it happen, but it's the nature of a physical sport like baseball," Padres manager Bud Black said. "It's unfortunate for Chase and the entire Padres organization."

It hasn't been determined who will replace Headley, but the leading candidates are Logan Forsythe and highly touted prospect Jedd Gyorko.

Headley had a breakout season last year. He hit .286 with a career-high 31 homers and he led the National League with 115 RBIs. Headley also won a Silver Slugger award and a gold glove, while finishing fifth in the NL MVP voting.
