David Freese Will Start Season on DL

Doug Benc/Getty Images(JUPITER, Fla.) -- The St. Louis Cardinals placed third baseman David Freese on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, due to a lower back strain.

Freese had an MRI Monday exposing the injury. He then had an anti-inflammatory shot that will keep him off the diamond until at least Thursday. The Cardinals open the regular season Monday. It was determined that wouldn't be enough time for Freese to get in game shape so he was placed on the DL.

Freese is eligible to comeback April 7, and the Cardinals hope he can play in the team's home opener April 8.

Ryan Jackson was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to take Freese's roster spot. Until Freese returns, Matt Carpenter is expected to play third and Daniel Descalso will take over at second base.

Freese hit .293 with 20 homers and 79 RBIs last season.
