Dodgers Eliminated from Playoff Contention

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers fell to the San Francisco Giants 4-3 on Tuesday night, eliminating themselves from playoff contention.

This was a must-win game for the Dodgers, who entered the night one game behind the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild-card spot in the National League.  The Cardinals lost, so the Dodgers needed a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.

The Dodgers were known for the flurry of in-season moves they made to improve their roster, acquiring first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pitcher Josh Beckett, outfielder Shane Victorino, and infielder Hanley Ramirez.  Despite the added talent, the team still fell short of their goal.

"Everything kind of comes to a screeching halt," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "To not have that opportunity to move forward is painful."

Buster Posey and Joaquin Arias hit home runs for the Giants to help pitcher Barry Zito earn his seventh straight decision.

The St. Louis Cardinals will travel to Atlanta on Friday in a one-game playoff to determine which squad advances to the Divisional round.
