Geno Smith: It's Still 'My Team'

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(FLORHAM PARK, N.J.) -- The New York Jets drafted quarterback Geno Smith two years ago and could be drafting another quarterback this week. But Smith, who has struggled during his two seasons in New York, is confident moving into the summer that he'll still be the one calling the plays.

"You have to expect anything, but going out there I believe this is my team," Smith said Wednesday. "I go out there and I work hard and try to lead the guys the best way that I can. I’m not going to sit here and talk about it. I want to lead this team the right way and I want to continue to get better as a player."

Smith is already anticipating a potential quarterback battle after the Jets added veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick in March.

Smith doesn't mind if the Jets go ahead and draft another quarterback after the organization met with all the top quarterbacks in this year's draft.

"There’s always other guys. That’s the nature of the business," Smith said. "There’s always going to be competition. I’ve always welcomed it and I still do."
