(NEW YORK) -- The New York Giants picked up their 2015 option on cornerback Prince Amukamara Thursday.
The 24-year-old Amukamara, was originally drafted by the Giants with the 19th pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
The rules of the new CBA allow for a team to exercise a fifth-year contract option on their first-round pick as long as it's done by a specified date in the fourth year of the player's contract. In this case, that day was May 3.
Because Amukamara was drafted outside the top 10, the option is worth the average salary of the No. 3 to the No. 25 highest-paid players at his position -- about $7 million.
Amukamara played and started all 16 games for the Giants last season. He compiled 76 tackles, defended 14 passes, caused two forced fumbles, and had an interception.
