Henderson Alvarez Fires No-Hitter On Final Day Of Season

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(MIAMI) --  On the final day of the regular season, Miami Marlins pitcher Henderson Alvarez tossed a no-hitter in the team's 1-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Alvarez no-hit the Tigers through nine innings, but the Marlins entered the bottom of the ninth needing to score at least one run in order for it to count.

He was standing in the on-deck circle when Giancarlo Stanton scored on a wild pitch from Luke Putkonen to make it all official.

"I was nervous and anxious," Alvarez said through a translator. "I started praying, 'Please give us a run.' I was hoping for a wild pitch.

It was the third no-hitter thrown in the majors this season and the fifth in the history of the Marlins.  Of the 282 no-hitters in MLB history, it was the only one to end on a wild pitch, STATS said.

"That's the beauty of baseball," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "You never know what you're going to see. On the last day of the season, what a treat.
