(INDIANAPOLIS) -- Ryan Hunter-Reay fended off Helio Castroneves to win his first Indianapolis 500 Sunday.
Hunter-Reay beat Castroneves by 0.060 seconds, the second closest finish in race history, to become the first American driver to win the Indianapolis 500 since 2006.
"I'm a proud American boy, that's for sure," Hunter-Reay said. "I've watched this race since I was sitting in diapers on the floor in front of the TV. This is American history, this race, this is American tradition."
Castroneves was trying to become the fourth driver to ever win four Indianapolis 500's.
"It was a great fight," Castroneves said in a cheerful voice, "I was having a great time. Unfortunately second is good but second also sucks if you know what I mean."
Marco Andretti finished third followed by Carlos Munoz and Juan Pablo Montoya.
Kurt Busch, who is racing later in the day in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race in Charlotte, finished in sixth.
