Indianapolis Colts put Andrew Luck on injured reserve, ending his season

Photo by Allen Kee / ESPN Images(INDIANAPOLIS) -- Quarterback Andrew Luck will not see the field this season, the team confirmed Thursday, placing the former number one overall draft pick on injured reserve.

Luck underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder on January 15. He returned to practice briefly, but felt pain in the shoulder and was shut down.

"I wish I was better and 100 percent this season,"  Luck told the team's website, "but that's not the case."

Still, he remained optimistic. "I know I'll be better from this," Luck insisted. "I know I'll be a better quarterback, teammate, person and player from this, and I'm excited for the future."

Luck had been seeking additional opinions after receiving a cortisone shot from team doctors.

Colts general  manager Chris Ballard said Thursday that the injury isn't believed to be career-ending, but that the team must be patient in his rehab.

In Luck's absence, the Colts have leaned on Jacoby Brissett. Still, they worked out several other quarterbacks, including Matt Barkley, Matt McGloin and Connor Shaw, on Thursday.
