Lakers' Dwight Howard practices for First Time

Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images(EL SEGUNDO, Calif.) -- The Los Angeles Lakers biggest offseason acquisition practiced for the first time, after having back surgery five months ago.

Dwight Howard was back on the court with his new team on Tuesday, but has been ruled out for their first game on Oct. 7.

"Hopefully, I'll be back for some preseason games," Howard said. He wants to play in one or two preseason games. "I think we're going to need it for chemistry and all that stuff. But, like I said, I'm not going to rush it. I'm going to continue to practice. We've had some great practices. Today was really good, so I'm happy."

Howard was on the court with Paul Gasol, Kobe Bryant, and Steve Nash, the four players who Lakers fans hope can bring back another championship to Los Angeles.

"We can only go by time right now and see how I feel after practice. We're not in a rush. These guys need me for the whole season, not a couple preseason games."

For Lakers coach Mike Brown, having these four on the court are the least of his problems, it's getting Howard ready for the regular season.

"Whenever he's ready, he'll be ready," Brown said. "It's our trainers' jobs. Our trainers do a terrific job of it. They're out here the whole practice and if they feel they need to pull him out of it, they'll pull him out."
