Mariners Place Starting Pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma on the DL

Mike McGinnis/Getty Images(SEATTLE) --The 2015 regular season has gotten off to a disastrous season for Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma. After two poor starts, the team has placed Iwakuma on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain.

"[We] felt it best to back him off and put him on the DL to give him time to make sure this thing, it's a long season we don't want this thing to be an aggravated issue as we go through the next 5½ months," Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said. "We'll know a little more tonight. At this point we're hoping it's nothing more than shoulder fatigue and something very small."

The team wanted Iwakuma to throw a bullpen session on Friday and determine where he was from a health standpoint. Not only did his shoulder not feel any better, he felt stiffness in his back and the team decided to shut him down.

In three starts this season, Iwakuma is 0-1 with a 6.61 ERA.
