Her fastest lap was timed at 45.817 seconds and her fastest speed was clocked at 196.434. Four-time Sprint Cup champion Jeff Gordon clinched the second spot by clocking a speed at 196.292.

With Patrick and Gordon occupying the front two spots in the 500, the rest of the field will be set on Thursday with the duel qualifying races.

The previous best starting position for a female driver in the 500 was 18th by Janet Guthrie in 1980.
