Nationals Sign Pitcher Dan Haren

Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images(NASHVILLE) --  The Washington Nationals have agreed to a one-year deal worth $13 million with starting pitcher Dan Haren.

Haren was nearly dealt to the Chicago Cubs last month but the deal fell through. Haren also wound up declining his $15.5 million option to become a free agent. The move payed off for Haren as his buyout with the Angels was for $3.5 million so combined with his salary with the Nationals, he'll make $16.5 million in 2013.

Haren has been regarded in recent years as one of the more underrated pitchers in all of baseball. From 2005-2011, Haren threw at least 200 innings every season and posted a 3.48 ERA during that span. Back and hips problems limited Haren last season with the Angels. He went 12-13 with a 4.33 ERA.

Meanwhile, the Nationals had the most wins in all of Major League Baseball. They reached the 98-wins mark based primarily on their pitching. The team had the second best team ERA in all of Major League Baseball.
