New York Jets Release QB Tim Tebow

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Tim Tebow’s stay in the Big Apple is over. The New York Jets cut the 25-year-old quarterback on Monday, after just one season with the club.

The Jets acquired Tebow in a trade last year with Denver after the Broncos signed Peyton Manning as a free agent.  New York had high hopes of utilizing the former Heisman Trophy winner as part of their wildcat offense, but it never materialized.

In 12 games with the Jets, Tebow completed 6 of 8 passes for 39 passing yards, while on the ground he rushed for 102 yards on 32 carries.

“We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow,” said Jets head coach Rex Ryan in a statement. “Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped. Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason. We wish him the best moving forward.”

Tebow was drafted out of Florida by the Broncos with the 25th overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft. He led Denver to an AFC Wild Card victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2011 season.
