New York Yankees Add Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay

Rob Carr/Getty Images(TAMPA, Fla.) -- The New York Yankees acquired outfielder Vernon Wells from the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday, in exchange for minor league outfielder Exircado Cayones and minor league left-handed pitcher Kramer Sneed.

The Halos will pay about $29 million of the $42 million the three-time All-Star is owed over the next two seasons. Wells originally signed a seven-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays before the start of the 2007 season, worth $178 million.

In 77 games with the Angels last season, Wells batted .230 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs.

The Yankees also signed free agent first baseman Lyle Overbay on Tuesday to a minor league contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 36-year-old Overbay batted .220 with five homers and seven RBIs in 19 spring training games this season with the Boston Red Sox, before being released on Tuesday.
