Orioles' Machado Suspended 5 Games

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(BALTIMORE) -- Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado was suspended five games on Tuesday for intentionally throwing his bat during Sunday's contest against the Athletics.

The 21 year old Machado is appealing the suspension and played in Baltimore's game Tuesday versus the Red Sox.

"I don't want to be down for five days," Machado said. "We're just going to go ahead and get that down, and that's it. Need to try to help out this team in anyway."

Fernando Abad threw several pitches close to Machado's face, leading to Machado launch his bat onto the field. The event caused both benches to clear. Machado and Abad were both ejected from the game. Abad received a fine but was not suspended.

Since the event occurred, Machado has apologized to his teammates for losing his temper.

Machado is hitting .227 with four home runs, 11 RBIs, and 19 runs scored this season.
