Phillies Ace Roy Halladay Set For Shoulder Surgery

Hunter Martin/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) -- Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Roy Halladay told reporters Wednesday that he will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder to repair a partially torn rotator cuff and remove a bone spur. He added that doctors will also clean up fraying in the labrum.

The Phillies placed the two-time Cy Young Award winner on the 15-day disabled list Monday after he went 2-4 with an 8.65 ERA in seven starts this season. He missed nearly two months last year dealing with a strained back muscle.

“Doctors seemed pretty optimistic that if what they saw was correct, that I could come back and be a lot more effective and have a chance to pitch this year,” Halladay said.

In his 16-year career, the 35-year-old right-hander has won 15 games or more eight times.
