Rays Designate Hideki Matsui for Assignment

Al Messerschmidt/Getty Images(BALTIMORE) -- The Tampa Bay Rays designated outfielder Hideki Matsui for assignment Wednesday. Newly acquired infielder Ryan Roberts will take Matsui’s spot on the roster.

Tampa Bay has 10 days to either trade Matsui, release him or place him on waivers.

The 38-year-old Matsui signed a minor league deal with the Rays on April 30. The team purchased his contract from Triple-A Durham on May 29.

In 95 at-bats with the Rays, Matsui batted .147 with two home runs and seven RBI.
