Rebecca Soni Takes Gold, Breaks Record

Ian MacNicol/Getty Images(LONDON) -- American Swimmer Rebecca Soni won gold in the women's 200-meter breaststroke and set a world record at the same time.

Soni, who won gold in this event in 2008, defended her title by finishing the race with a time of 2 minutes, 19.59 seconds, breaking her own world record, which she set Wednesday at the semifinals.

This was the 25-year-old's second medal of the 2012 games. She won the silver in the 100-meter breaststroke, coming in second to 15-year-old Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania.

Soni becomes the sixth swimmer to break a world record at the 2012 Games.
