(SURPRISE, Ariz.) -- The Kansas City Royals stacked bullpen took a big hit this weekend as reliever Luke Hochevar will need to undergo Tommy John Surgery, and will miss the entire 2014 season.
"This is a kid who's played his heart out for the Royals in the rebuidling process," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He's given us everything he's got. He's a phenomenal young man, he's a tremendous teammate, and you really, really want to see him be a part of this. It's extremely hard."
This is yet another chapter in the up-and-down career of the former number one overall pick. After failing to reach success as a starting pitcher, Hochevar was primarily used as a reliever for the first time during his career.
In 2012 as a starter, Hochevar went 8-16 with a 5.73 ERA. In 58 appearances in 2013, Hochevar went 5-2 with a 1.92 ERA.
During his seven-year-career, Hochevar has gone 43-61 with a 5.10 ERA.
