Rumors abound on college football coaching carousel

Rulles/iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The college football coaching carousel keeps spinning, with the University of Tennessee still searching for its next leader, and Florida State University pressing its coach to make a decision.

ESPN reported on Thursday that North Carolina State head football coach Dave Doeren, considered a top candidate for the Tennessee job, had turned down the Volunteers to remain in Raleigh. In doing so, Doeren agreed to a new five-year contract with NC State.

Tennesse had reportedly reached an agreement with Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano earlier this month. But furious fan reaction, including concern over his loose ties with Penn State during that school's sex scandal, led the school to back out of that deal.

Tennessee may now look to fired Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin for their head coaching position.

In Tallahassee, Florida State officials are urging head coach Jimbo Fisher to choose to remain with the Seminoles, or to take a hefty offer from Texas A&M to replace Sumlin. Fisher led FSU to a 2013 national championship, but is considered the Texas A&M's top choice. ESPN said last week that several FSU officials expect Fisher to leave the school this offseason.
