The team fired Steve Spagnuolo on Thursday after just one season as defensive coordinator.

"I personally want to thank Steve and Ken for their contributions during what was an unprecedented 2012 season," head coach Sean Payton said. "Philosophically we are changing our defense to a 3-4 alignment and right now is the best time to accomplish this transition."

New Orleans is coming off a season in which they gave up the most yards ever in a single season with 7,042. They also gave up 454 points en route to a dissapointing 7-9 season.

Spagnuolo had been the St. Louis Rams head coach before his brief stint in New Orleans, going 10-38.
