(EAST HARTFORD, Conn.) -- U.S. midfielder Brek Shea was substituted into the game in the 77th minute and scored the game-winner just five minutes later, giving the U.S. men's soccer team a 1-0 win over Costa Rica in the 2013 Gold Cup.
The win clinches the U.S. first place in Group C.
Shea was streaking down the field when teammate Landon Donovan sent him a perfect pass, which Shea promptly sent into the back of the Costa Rican net.
It was Shea's first international goal.
"It's good," Shea said. "First U.S. goal...Only goal of the game...It wins the group. Really good."
The U.S. has now won eight straight, an all-time record for the National team.
Next up for the Americans, a trip to Baltimore July 21 where they'll meet up with El Salvador in the quarterfinal.
