Auburn Fires Defensive Coordinator Ellis Johnson

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- After a 55-point loss to arch rival Alabama in the Iron Bowl, Auburn has decided to let go of defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson.

"At this time I felt it was best for our program to make a change with our defensive coordinator," Head coach Gus Malzahn said in a statement. "Ellis is a true professional and I would like to thank him for his contributions at Auburn."

"This is part of the business and I totally understand," Johnson said in a statement. "I did think we were good in several areas, but overall it wasn't good enough. I'm disappointed for our players, but this is a results business. I want to thank Coach Malzahn and Auburn for the opportunity the last two years."

This is a major coaching shake up to a staff that helped take the Tigers to the BCS national championship game last season.

In 2014, Auburn is allowing 26.1 points per game, which is 10th in the SEC. They also ranked ninth in total defense as they are giving up 388.7 yards per game.

Johnson joined Malzahn's staff back in December 2012.

Nick Saban on Auburn: We Remember Last Year

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(TUSCALOOSA, Alabama) -- Alabama is hoping to avoid another shocking defeat to Auburn this year in the Iron Bowl on Saturday.

In the final play of last year's game, Chris Davis returned a missed field goal by Alabama for a 100-yard touchdown run, stunning top-ranked Alabama.

Head coach Nick Saban said Monday that this is what the game is all about.

"We all kind of remember what happened," he added. "I think that it was very disappointing to all of us here, not just the last play, but the last five minutes of the game, that we never finished the game like we needed to and it was a tough way to lose a game."

"The Iron Bowl is one of the greatest rivalries in college football and means a lot to people in the state, regardless of which side you're on," Saban continued.  "As a competitor it's a great opportunity because this game has had a lot of significance over the last few years."

Alabama currently sits in the number one spot in the College Football Playoff rankings. Meanwhile, Auburn is 4-3 in their SEC matchups this year and are 8-3.

"Their offense is one of the most productive in the country," Saban said. "They got a very good scheme. [Auburn quarterback] Nick Marshall does a fantastic job of executing that on the field."

Marshall has tossed 15 touchdowns this year and thrown for 1,859 yards.

Marshall Leads (5) Auburn Past South Carolina, 42-35

iStock/Thinkstock(AUBURN, Ala.) -- Tigers senior quarterback Nick Marshall rushed for three touchdowns and added another one through the air, as (5) Auburn (6-1; 3-1 SEC) held off South Carolina (4-4; 2-4 SEC), 42-35 on Saturday night.

With the game tied at 35-35 with 11:22 left in the fourth quarter, Marshall scored the go-ahead touchdown on a nine-yard run. He would finish the game with 89 rushing yards on 10 carries and 139 passing yards on 12 of 14 attempts.

Senior quarterback Dylan Thompson and South Carolina’s offense stood toe-to-toe with Auburn’s defense, falling at the last second when a game-tying touchdown was intercepted in the endzone by Tigers junior defensive back Jonathan Jones.

Thompson had 402 passing yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions.

SEC West Dominates New AP Poll

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- In the latest Associated Press college football poll, the Southeastern Conference (SEC) reached a new level of dominance. Four of the top five teams in the country all reside in the SEC, the first time a single conference can boast such a feat.

Mississippi State (6-0) remained the number one team in the land while Ole Miss (7-0) remains third. Alabama (6-1) jumped up to fourth in the poll, thanks to a 59-0 rout over then 21st-ranked Texas A&M, with Auburn (5-1) rounding out the top-five.

The lone team not from the SEC in the top-five is Florida State (7-0) of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Seminoles held off Notre Dame on Saturday, which dropped to seventh with the loss.

The Oregon Ducks (6-1) sit at sixth in the nation while the Irish (6-1) dropped two spots to seventh. Michigan State (6-1), Georgia (6-1), and TCU (6-1) finish out the top-10 teams.

Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Stanford all fell from the AP Top-25 Poll after week seven.

Top WR Nate Craig Commits to Auburn

BananaStock/Getty Images(NEW YORK) --  Nate Craig, the No. 1 wide receiver and No. 6 player overall in the ESPN Junior 300, verbally committed to play football for the University of Auburn on Monday night.

Craig chose the Tigers over USC, Ohio State, and Alabama.

"I just thought Auburn was the best fit for me," Craig said. "I got to go up there this weekend and spend some time with coach [Dameyune] Craig and coach [Gus] Malzahn and that just sealed the deal for me."

"I was at Alabama for the whole week, but just building a relationship with the Auburn coaches and coach Craig was a big impact on my recruitment and did a great job. With coach Malzahn I got to spend some time with him and then I sat down with my mom and decided to make a decision," he continued.

The 6-foot-2, 202-pound Craig caught 37 passes for 502 yards and 12 touchdowns as a sophomore for Tampa Catholic High School this past season.

Auburn now has three commits for the class of 2016.

Florida State's Benjamin to Enter NFL Draft

Banana Stock/Getty Images(NEW YORK) --  Florida State wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin announed Friday that he will enter the 2014 draft.

Benjamin caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Jameis Winston with 13 seconds remaining in the Vizio National Championship, helping the Seminoles defeat Auburn 34-31.

The redshirt sophomore caught 54 passes for 1,011 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Seminoles.  He developed into a dominant receiver after showing flashes of inconsistency earlier in the year.

The 6-foot-5, 234 pound Benjamin could emerge as a deep threat in the NFL because of his size and athleticism.

He emerged as a dominant force late in the season after periods of inconsistency and had two touchdown receptions in the ACC title game.
