Report: Mariners Turned Down Trade Offer for Red Sox Bradley

Jim McIsaac/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- The once promising Jackie Bradley Jr.'s value is apparently so low the Red Sox cannot give him away.

Boston attempted to trade Bradley to the Seattle Mariners during spring training in exchange for left-handed reliever Charlie Furbush, according to ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes. The Mariners turned down the offer.

The 25-year-old outfielder was once the top prospect in the Red Sox farm system, but has been largely invisible at the plate in his various stints in the majors.

Bradley has struggled to adjust to major league off-speed pitches and sports a .193 batting average over 168 games with Boston.

Furbush currently boasts a 1.80 ERA across 17 appearances this season with a 7/3 strikeout to walk ratio.

Red Sox to Place RHP Justin Masterson on Disabled List

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- The Boston Red Sox are planning to place starting pitcher Justin Masterson on the disabled list because of arm fatigue, according to manager John Farrell. He made the announcement before Wednesday’s series finale against the Oakland Athletics.

Masterson lasted just 2 1-3 innings in a 9-2 loss to the A’s on Tuesday night. He allowed six earned runs on six hits and one walk while only striking out one.

In seven games this season, the right hander is 2-2 with a 6.37 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP.

Red Sox Demote Outfielder Allen Craig to the Minors

Brian D. Kersey/Getty Images(TORONTO) -- The Boston Red Sox have seen enough of Allen Craig as the team has decided to demote the five-year veteran to the minor leagues.

In a pair of moves, the team has sent Craig and reliever Robbie Ross Jr. to to Triple-A Pawtucket while promoting outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and pitcher Steven Wright.

"We sent him out to try get back on track and get him more regular, more consistent at-bats, not only for his own production but maybe so he can get into a situation where he can come back and help us," Red Sox manager John Farrell said.

"This is as much about Allen as it is us and the current stretch we're going through," he continued. "We felt like the best and most clear path to get us back on track is to have every player hopefully performing to the best of their abilities. For Allen, that meant more regular at-bats at Triple-A for the time being."

Before coming to the Red Sox in 2014 via trade from the St. Louis Cardinals, Craig was a key member of a team that won two World Series titles from 2011-2013.

Craig hit .291 during his time with the Cardinals, but is hitting just .130 since being traded to Boston.

Red Sox Set to Hire Carl Willis as Pitching Coach

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- Former Cleveland Indians pitching coach Carl Willis, is set to join Boston and become the Red Sox new pitching coach.

Willis is currently serving as the Indians' Triple-A pitching coach for the Columbus (Ohio) Clippers, however, he informed the Clippers he had taken the Red Sox job after their game Friday night, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

"They're to announce it for me [Saturday]," Willis said. "The deal was I didn't want to leave until the Indians could arrange for someone to get here, and they're prepared to get through the weekend without somebody in Boston.  So getting there after their game Saturday, we play Sunday and fly to Oakland.  So that will be a good five-hour trip that I can get brought up to speed on everything that's going on there."

Willis was the Indians' pitching coach from 2003-09 and he served as the pitching coach for the Seattle Mariners from 2010-13.  As a pitching coach, Willis had three Cy Young Award winners on his staffs: CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee in Cleveland and Felix Hernandez in Seattle.

Red Sox Call Up Top Prospect Blake Swihart

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(BOSTON) -- The Boston Red Sox called up top prospect, catcher Blake Swihart.

The 23-year-old Swihart comes up to replace catcher Ryan Hanigan who underwent surgery Saturday on the knuckle of his right pinkie finger.

Swihart started and hit ninth in the Red Sox 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees Saturday. The youngster went 1-for-3 with an infield single, a walk, and a run scored.

"I was definitely nervous, but I had to turn it into focus," Swihart said. "I had a big job to do."

Swihart, who the Red Sox selected with the 26th overall pick of the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft, played in 18 games for Triple-A Pawtucket before the promotion. During that time, he hit .338 with no home runs, 11 RBIs, one stolen base, and a .392 on-base percentage.

Shane Victorino Placed on DL

Hannah Foslien/Getty Images(BALTIMORE) -- The Boston Red Sox placed outfielder Shane Victorino on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring Saturday.

The Red Sox recalled pitcher Matt Barnes from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Victorino's place.

This is the third time in two seasons Victorino has been placed on the DL due to his right hamstring. Despite that, Red Sox skipper John Farrell says the move had almost as much to do with the team as it did Victorino.

"I wouldn't say he stalled, he's actually improving," Farrell said when talking about Victorino. "He worked out today early this morning, ran in the pool. But we felt like with the number of innings our bullpen is pitching, that is the overriding thing at this point.''

With Victorino out, the Red Sox can use Brock Holt, Allen Craig or Daniel Nava in right field.
