Red Sox Pitcher Joel Hanrahan Out For Season

Major League Baseball (BOSTON) -- Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Joel Hanrahan will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm, the team announced Saturday.

Hanrahan is expected to miss six to nine months after the procedure, which will take place next week.  He visited with Dr. James Andrews on Friday and it was determined that surgery was needed.

"The way I look at it, surgery, the programs that they have now, surgery is kind of like putting a band-aid on something," he said.

He was placed on the disabled list Monday for the second time this season after exiting a game against the Minnesota Twins with pain in his arm. 

In his first year with the Red Sox, Hanrahan went 0-1 with a 9.82 ERA and four saves.  He will be a free agent after the season.

Red Sox Place Hanrahan on 60-Day DL

Robert Rogers/MLB Photos via Getty Images(BOSTON) -- The Boston Red Sox transferred closer Joel Hanrahan from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL Thursday.

Hanrahan has an injured right elbow and has been sent to Birmingham, Ala. to meet with Dr. James Andrews.

Hanrahan left Monday's win over the Twins in the ninth inning after serving up the game-tying home run to Brian Dozier. The injury was originally thought to be forearm stiffness but now there is worry that he could have a torn ulnar collateral ligament, which would require Tommy John Surgery.

Either way Hanrahan is expected to miss at least two months.

"A healthy Joel Hanrahan getting injured is a blow for anyone,'' Red Sox manager John Farrell said, "and a guy who's been a very successful pitcher, I don't know that you can necessarily just replace a guy of his ability and talents.

"But regardless of the injuries we're dealing with right now, our expectation and our level of play shouldn't be compromised by that. That's the expectation here, to go out every night to prepare and put a game together to win.''

Pitcher Jose De La Torre has been called up from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Hanrahan's place.

With both Hanrahan and Andrew Bailey on the DL, Farrell has named Junichi Tazawa the closer.

In nine appearances this season, Hanrahan has a 9.82 ERA, 2.18 WHIP and four saves.

Red Sox Put Closer Andrew Bailey on DL, Joel Hanrahan Injured

Major League Baseball(BOSTON) -- The Boston Red Sox might have a serious problem on their hands when it comes to the back-end of their bullpen. They placed closer Andrew Bailey on the disabled list, and fellow closer Joel Hanrahan injured himself on Monday.

Bailey is suffering from right biceps inflammation and his DL stint will be postdated to April 29, making him eligible to return on May 14. An MRI confirmed that Bailey was indeed injured, but showed no "structural changes or damage."

"It confirmed the training staff's findings and what Andrew was feeling," Red Sox manager John Farrell said, "which should give him some peace of mind."

Meanwhile, Hanrahan was supposed to replace Bailey as the closer, but he left Monday night's game in the ninth inning with a forearm strain, according to Farrell. Hanrahan blew his second save in six opportunities, and struggled the regain his All-Star form.

It is unknown right now if Hanrahan will need to be put back on the DL. He previously spent time on the disabled list this season because of a hamstring strain.
