Jets Trade Up in Draft to Add Bryce Petty

iStockphoto(NEW YORK) -- The New York Jets made a quarterback controversy even more interesting when the team traded up in the fourth round to draft Bryce Petty of Baylor.

"That was the longest 48 hours I've ever had in my life," Petty told reporters after being drafted.

Petty said falling to the fourth round didn't bother him.

"No, not at all," he said. "That's part of it, when people question you. My job is to prove to the 31 other teams what they're missing out on."

Petty will be added to a depth chart that includes Geno Smith and veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was acquired in a trade with the Houston Texans.

The Jets haven't named a starter, saying Smith and Fitzpatrick will compete in training camp. Coach Todd Bowles said Smith will go into training camp as the No. 1 quarterback, but he also said that it could change.

Spartans Score 21 Unanswered in Fourth Quarter to Shock Baylor

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(ARLINGTON, Texas) -- Connor Cook led scoring drives of 71, 60, and 81 yards in the fourth quarter, the final ending with a go-ahead touchdown to Keith Mumphery with 17 seconds remaining, as No. 8 Michigan State rallies to beat No. 5 Baylor 42-41 at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic Thursday.

Michigan State trailed by 20 points entering the fourth quarter before mounting its comeback. The winning touchdown was setup when Chris Callahan's 43-yard field goal attempt with 1:05 left was blocked by Marcus Rush. After the Spartans took the lead, Baylor had one last attempt to win the game, but quarterback Bryce Petty was sacked on back-to-back plays before Riley Bullough ended the game with an interception.

"It's just sort of crazy," coach Mark Dantonio said. "I really probably can't put it into words. We just kept pace. We didn't panic."

Petty set a Cotton Bowl-record throwing for 550 yards and three touchdowns for Baylor (11-2) in the loss.

"We've played a lot of really good games over the last seven seasons. Won a lot of really good games. And this is one of the tougher non-wins that I've ever experienced," Baylor coach Art Briles said. "It's got nothing to do with the big picture. The small picture right now is letting a game get away from us today."

Jeremy Langford rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns for Michigan State (11-2) in the win.

Baylor Ends Regular Season with Win Over Kansas State

ThinkStock(WACO, Texas) -- The Baylor Bears earned a share of their second straight Big 12 Championship with a 38-27 win over ninth-ranked Kansas State on Saturday. The win also keeps number six Baylor (11-1) in the running for a spot in the inaugural College Football Playoff.

The Bears opened the game with a pair of rushing touchdowns from Bryce Petty and Shock Linwood that immediately gave them the upper hand. The Wildcats (9-3) got on the board in the second quarter as Charles Jones scored from 1 yard out, but the defense was unable to stop Baylor's high-octane attack. Baylor answered every Kansas State score with a scoring drive of their own, holding a 24-14 lead at halftime.

Baylor added two more touchdowns in the third and went up 38-20 before the Wildcats made a run in the fourth quarter. Jake Waters hit Tyler Lockett for an 8-yard touchdown pass to get Kansas State within 11, but they were unable to get any closer.

The Bears now hope they are part of the four-team playoff, which currently has TCU in ahead of Baylor, when the final rankings are announced Sunday at noon. Baylor defeated the Horned Frogs in their only head-to-head meeting while TCU clinched a share of the conference crown with a blowout win over Illinois State on Saturday.

Big 12 Title Preview

iStockPhoto/Thinkstock(WACO, Texas) -- The Baylor Bears will have to win on Saturday against Kansas State to keep their College Football playoff hopes alive.

Baylor sits on the outside looking in at No. 5 in the rankings, and winning the Big 12 title could boost their chances of getting one of the top four spots.

"Down to a one games season. That's the way we're looking at it," Baylor head coach Art Briles said this week. "We're going to try and win every possession Saturday and take care of business."

Baylor is going for back-to-back Big 12 titles.

"Making history is about winning football games," Briles said. "We're winning games and trying to create a consistency in the program; trying to prove that we belong with the nation's elite in college football."

Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty is set to play despite suffering concussion-related symptoms from a hit he took last weekend.

Still, Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder is ready for the game.

"They're obviously a very talented well coached football team," he said.  "It is a great challenge."

(5) Baylor Scores 24 Straight in Fourth to Rally Past (9) TCU, 61-58

iStockphoto(WACO, Texas) -- Fifth-ranked Baylor scored 24-straight points, erasing a 21 point deficit with 11:38 left to play, to beat ninth-ranked TCU, 61-58 Saturday.

After Baylor tied the game on Bryce Petty's 25-yard touchdown pass to Corey Coleman, TCU had a chance to win. The Horned Frogs (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) drove it to the Bears 45 but turned it over on downs after failing to convert a fourth-and-three. Baylor then marched down the field before Chris Callahan delivered the game-winning 28-yard field goal with time expiring.

"I just knew, looking at guys' faces, that we were going to come back in that game," Petty said. "With our offense and the way that we play defense, 21 points isn't a big deal for us."

Petty finishes the game completing 28 of 55 passes for a career-high 510 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions.

Baylor (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) has now won 13-straight home games.
