Ducks Move on to Western Conference Finals

Debora Robinson/NHLI via Getty Images(ANAHEIM) -- Corey Perry endured a brutal hit from Flames center Matt Stajan and would return the pain in spades.

Perry scored the game winning goal 2:26 minutes into overtime to send the Anaheim Ducks onto the Western Conference Finals where the Chicago Blackhawks await.

Early in the second period, Stajan drove his hip hard into Perry with an open-ice check. Perry collapsed onto the ice and soon limped over to his bench. He returned a few minutes later, but obviously not at full strength.

“It was huge, you see him go down and hold your breath and hope he’s fine,” Ducks forward Matt Beleskey said. “He’s a guy who takes a beating every night, comes back and scores big goals, that’s why he’s one of the best players in the league.”

The Ducks tied the game early in the third when Francois Beauchimin fired a rocket of a shot on Karri Ramo. Beleskey was screening Ramo and tipped the puck past the Flames net minder.

In overtime, Cam Fowler fired a shot towards Ramo, the puck died in the crease and during the scrum Patrick Maroon and Perry both slashed away at the puck. It was Perry, who was fighting for position with Ramo, that pushed the puck into the net and defeated the Flames in five games.

Flames Ice Canucks, 7-4 to Advance in NHL Playoffs

Comstock/Thinkstock(CALGARY, Alberta) -- The Calgary Flames iced the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday Night, 7-4 to win their first-round playoff series in six games. It’s the first time the Flames have advanced to the second round since 2004, when they appeared in the Stanley Cup Finals, losing to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games.

The Canucks opened the game on 3-0 run, behind goals from forwards Brandon McMillan, Jannik Hansen, and Radim Vrbata. The Flames would pick up the pace and grab a 5-4 lead at 15:43 into the third period on a goal from center Matt Stajan. Center Jiri Hudler and forward Michael Ferland would tack on insurance goals for Calgary.

Flames goaltenders Karri Ramo and Jonas Hiller combined to stop 18-of-22 shots attempted while Ryan Miller saved 26-of-31 shots on goals for the Canucks.

Flames Clinch Playoff Berth, Eliminate Defending Champs

Comstock/Thinkstock(CALGARY, Alberta) -- The defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings have been eliminated and the Flames are in the playoffs.

The Kings fell to the Calgary Flames 3-1 on Thursday night after Jiri Hudler's two-goal performance.

"What an amazing feeling. After we scored that empty-netter, the building was electric," Hudler said.

Calgary went into the game up two points in the standings on Los Angeles and could not afford to be tied with the loss.

"I'm very proud of them. We believed in training camp. We really believed," said Flames coach Bob Hartley.

Flames goalie Jonas Hiller, who had 33 saves in the victory, said: "To be able to beat the defending Stanley Cup champions to make the playoffs makes it even more special. It starts sinking in that we're going to be playing a few more games. I'm really happy. I'm happy for myself. I'm happy for the team. I'm happy for all of Calgary."
