Blackhawks' Patrick Kane Could Miss the Next 6-10 Weeks

Len Redkoles/Getty Images(CHICAGO) -- It has been a rough 24 hours for Chicago sports fans. Not only will Bulls point guard Derrick Rose be on the shelf indefinitely due to another knee injury, but Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane will miss the next 6-10 weeks with an upper-body injury.

Kane was cross checked in the lower back by Florida Panthers defenseman Alex Petrovic in the first period of their game on Tuesday.

This is a tough blow for the Blackhawks as Kane is tied with Jakub Voracek of the Flyers and Nicklas Backstrom of the Washington Capitals for the most points in the NHL at 64.

"I don't think you can replace the things that he does with the puck, without the puck, the attention that he draws, but one of the strengths of the organization is depth," Blackhawks forward Patrick Sharp said. "You hear it all the time: When a player goes down, you need to step up and collectively fill those shoes. But you guys know as well as I do what kind of player Kaner is."

Kane was attempting to be the first American-born player to win the Art Ross trophy, which goes to the player who leads the NHL in points.

Blackhawks Forward Carcillo Suspended for Cross Checking

Len Redkoles/ NHLI via Getty Images

(CHICAGO, Ill.) -- Chicago Blackhawks perennial troublemaker Daniel Carcillo has been suspended six games by the NHL for cross checking.

Carcillo took his stick to the arm to Jets forward Mathieu Perrault, while he wasn't looking, during the second period of Friday night’s game against Winnipeg.

The NHL Department of player safety classified Carcillo as a repeat offender. Carcillo has had eleven prior incidents, according to the NHL, including three stick related infractions.

Normally, cross checking is punished with an in-game penalty, but according to the NHL, supplemental discipline was required with Carcillo because the play was already whistled dead, Perrault was not expecting to be hit after the whistle had blown and was injured as a result. Finally, Carcillo, "hit Perrault in an unprotected spot on his arm; below the shoulder pad and above the elbow pad."

Carcillo will be eligible to return when Chicago plays the Minnesota Wild on February 3. The Blackhawks will then play the Jets in their next game on the 6th.

Blackhawks Expected to Lose Versteeg for a Month

Christian Petersen/Getty Images(CHICAGO) -- Chicago Blackhawks winger Kris Versteeg is expected to miss around a month due to an upper body injury, according to head coach Joel Quenneville.

Versteeg suffered a left hand injury in the third period of the Winter Classic Thursday when it was struck by a puck, shot by Capitals winger Eric Fehr.

The 28-year-old Versteeg has been on fire to start the season. The eight-year NHL veteran has nine goals and 27 points in 34 games this season.

“You feel bad for him," Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane said. "Especially with how good of a year he’s having.”

With Versteeg out, the Blackhawks called up top prospect Teuvo Teravainen. Teravainen has 17 assists and 23 points in 33 games for the Blackhawks' AHL team in Rockford this season.

Capitals Clip Blackhawks in Winter Classic

Len Redkoles/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- Troy Brouwer scored a power-play goal with 12.9 seconds remaining to lift the Washington Capitals over the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in the Winter Classic Thursday.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 18th goal of the season in the win.

"We start talking about Winter Classic since we started the season, and this is it," Ovechkin said. "I remember Brouwie said it's a good time to show up and make a show. And he did."

The Capitals (19-11-7, 45 pts) raced to a 2-0 lead halfway through the first period when Ovechkin knocked in a rebound.

The Blackhawks (25-11-2, 52 pts) fought back and tied the game in the second period, when Brandon Saad scored on a pass from Jonathan Toews.

Nationals Park had a turnout of 42,832 people to watch the seventh Winter Classic.
