Lester Leads Cubs to 6th Straight Win

Chicago Cubs/MLB(CHICAGO) -- John Lester pitched seven innings allowing nine hits, one run, one walk, while striking out seven, to lead the Chicago Cubs to its sixth straight win, this one over the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 Saturday.

Lester outpitched Pirates starter Gerrit Cole, who threw six innings allowing seven hits, two runs, one walk, while striking out eight.

"I was fortunate to get some quick outs, especially early in the game," Lester said, "and then kind of from there, just trying to maintain, trying to keep our guys in the dugout as best we could, get out of that warm air and you know get these guys up to bat against Cole."

Kris Bryant went 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored, and Starlin Castro had two RBIs in the win.

The Cubs are on their longest winning-streak since 2011 when they won seven straight.

Kris Bryant Hits 1st Major League Home Run

Chicago Cubs/MLB(MILWAUKEE) -- Chicago Cubs rookie third baseman Kris Bryant hit his first career major league home run in the third inning of the team's 12-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night.

Bryant had gone 20 games and 73 to begin his major league career. It was the Cubs' first three-run home run this season.

"Get the first one out of the way. Kind of been a while, but I did it," Bryant said afterwards. "It was a cool feeling, but it would be nice to get a win out of it. It will still be a day I'll remember."

As Bryant rounded the bases, the entire Cubs team ran into the clubhouse so when he arrived back it was empty.

"It's pretty funny that they all came in here [the clubhouse] and when I come back to the dugout nobody was in the dugout, so that was pretty funny," Bryant said. "We had a good time with it. They were waiting by the door. It was kind of like a mosh pit, punching me and all that kind of stuff."

The 20 games without a home run was the longest streak in Bryant's collegiate or professional career.

Cubs Calling Up Prospect Russell

Chicago Cubs/MLB(CHICAGO, Ill) -- Just days after calling up the much-hyped Kris Bryant Friday, the Chicago Cubs will bring 2B/SS Addison Russell to the show.

The Cubs acquired Russell from the Oakland A's last season before the trade deadline in exchange for pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel.

According to MLB.com, Russell is the fifth-best prospect in baseball.  Bryant is second.

The Cubs infield is now manned by four players under 25, with a lot of promise. Bryant and Russell will join shortstop Starlin Castro and first baseman Anthony Rizzo to form the foundation of what Chicago hopes will end a 106-season World Series drought.

To make room on the roster, Arismendy Alcantara will be optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Russell is expected to make his debut Tuesday night in Pittsburgh against the Pirates.

Female Fan Ok After Taking Foul Ball to Head at Pirates Game

iStock/Thinkstock(PITTSBURGH) -- A scary moment occurred in the top of the second inning of the Pittsburgh Pirates game Monday night, as a foul tip ricocheted and struck a female fan in the head.

As Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro swung just underneath a pitch from A.J. Burnett, the ball screamed off his bat towards the protective netting behind home plate. A woman leaving her seat was hit in the back of the head and collapsed.

The game was delayed 23 minutes as she was treated, removed on a stretcher and taken to the hospital for treatment.

The Pirates released a statement:

During the top of the second inning a female fan was struck in the head with a foul ball.

After initial treatment by PNC Park and Pittsburgh EMS personnel, she was placed on a stretcher, moved to a nearby ambulance and brought to the hospital for further treatment.  She was conscious and alert at the time of transport, graciously thanking her caregivers while giving a “thumbs up” gesture to nearby fans.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her.

The Cubs would win the game 5-2.

Kris Bryant Goes Hitless with 3 Ks in MLB Debut

Chicago Cubs/MLB(CHICAGO) -- Top prospect Kris Bryant made his much anticipated major league debut with the Chicago Cubs on Friday in front of a crowd of 32,138 at Wrigley Field.

Bryant went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts while batting cleanup in the Cubs 5-4 loss to the San Diego Padres.

"Sure, I could have done a little better," Bryant said. "There's two sides to the ball. I felt I did well on defense."

He did. In the first inning he handled a hard-hit grounder by Derek Norris to start a double play. Then, in the fifth inning, he caught a screaming line drive with a runner on first base that possibly saved a run.

Bryant hit .321 with three home runs, 10 RBIs, and two stolen bases for Triple-A Iowa before being called up.
