Pro Football Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik Dies at 89

NFL(NEW YORK) -- Pro Football Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik died on Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles said.  He was 89.

Bednarik was a two-time NFL champion and passed away at an assisted living facility in Richland, Pennsylvania, following a brief illness, the Eagles said in a statement.

Bednarik was one of the first tough hard hitting linebackers that played until the game was over.

"The positions I played, every play, I was making contact, not like that ... Deion Sanders," Bednarik once said. "He couldn't tackle my wife. He's back there dancing out there instead of hitting."

Bednarik also was an All-NFL center in 1950 and spent his entire 14-year career with Philadelphia.

"I have had the opportunity to spend time with Chuck Bednarik, who is truly one of the most unique players that this game has ever seen," Eagles coach Chip Kelly said in a statement released by the team. "The foundation of this organization and this league is built on the backs of past greats, with Chuck at the forefront.

"The way he played the game with an endless passion and tenacity helped establish the standard of excellence that this organization stands for; one that we strive to achieve each and every day," Kelly continued.

Bednarik famously knocked out Giants running back Frank Gifford in 1960 with a concussion that kept Gifford out until 1962.
