Reds Pitcher Sean Marshall will Undergo Another Shoulder Surgery

Photos.com/Thinkstock(CINCINNATI) -- Cincinnati Reds left-handed reliever Sean Marshall's comeback from shoulder surgery is over.

Marshall had surgery to repair a torn labrum on June 24 and now needs to have season-ending surgery in the same shoulder.

"I feel bad for Sean," Reds skipper Bryan Price said. "He's worked so hard to try and work his way through this recurring shoulder issue. It's been a challenge for some time now."

Marshall has only pitched in 31 games since 2013 due to shoulder injuries. This is quite a change for a guy who between 2010-12 led the major leagues in appearances with 231.

The 32-year-old Marshall has pitched 615 1/3 innings throughout nine big league seasons. During that time he's struck out 537 hitters while compiling a 37-46 record, 3.86 ERA, and a 1.33 WHIP.

Reds Designate P Kevin Gregg for Assignment

Photos.com/Thinkstock(CINCINNATI) -- The Cincinnati Reds designated reliever Kevin Gregg for assignment, the club announced on Monday.

In 11 appearances with the Reds this season, the 37-year-old Gregg was 0-2 with a 10.13 ERA. He allowed 12 earned runs and 13 hits in 10 2-3 innings of work.

Cincinnati signed Gregg to a minor league contract this off-season and earned a $1.5 million deal when he made the roster.

To take Gregg’s place on the 25-man roster, the Reds called up right-handed reliever Pedro Villarreal from Triple-A Louisville. In 17 games across four seasons with Cincinnati, he owns an 0-3 record with a 6.75 ERA.

Homer Bailey Will Undergo Season Ending Surgery

Jason Wise/MLB Photos via Getty Images(CINCINNATI) -- Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Homer Bailey will have Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow and miss the rest of the season.

After finding out he tore a ligament in his right elbow Monday, Bailey took a few days to decide whether surgery was best for him.

Bailey's season came to an end in September last year when he was forced to have surgery to repair a tear in his right forearm. He only made two starts this season before getting injured again.

"It's absolutely crushing to Homer personally, to our ballclub," Reds skipper Bryan Price said. "We were really looking forward to a healthy Homer Bailey this year and that type of influence on our club."

Before the 2014 season Bailey signed a six-year, $105 million contract with the Reds.

Bailey was originally selected with the seventh overall pick of the 2004 amateur draft by Cincinnati. Since then he's compiled a 58-51 record with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 168 starts for the Reds.

Reds' Starting Pitcher Homer Bailey Lands on the DL with Elbow Injury

Jason Wise/MLB Photos via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The start of the 2015 season has been disastrous for Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Homer Bailey. The team announced that he will need to go back on the disabled list with an elbow ligament sprain.

The severity of the injury if not known just yet, so there is no timetable for when he could return to the mound.

Bailey missed the first couple weeks of the season as he was still recovering from surgery last September to repair a torn flexor mass tendon near his elbow.

When he did pitch this season, the 29-year-old Bailey struggled mightily, going 0-1 with a 5.56 ERA in two starts.

Bailey is in the second year of a six-year, $105 million contract.

Commissioner Approves Rose's Participation in All-Star Game

iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) -- The most infamous man in baseball has been given the blessing by Commissioner Manfred to participate in this year's All-Star activities in Cincinnati.

Pete Rose, baseball's all-time hits leader, has been banned by baseball since 1989 for gambling on games. He recently applied for reinstatement to the game with new MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.

Rose, 74, was a player on the Reds from 19 seasons (1963-1978, 1984-1986) and served as Cincinnati's manager from 1984 to 1989. He won the NL Rookie of the Year, won three World Series -- including being named MVP in the 1975 -- with Cincinnati.

As part of the ban, Rose is not able to access areas any fan would not be allowed to attend, without the permission of the commissioner.

Fox, who will broadcast the All-Star Game, recently hired Rose to serve as a studio analyst for their baseball coverage.
