The injury will sideline Pavano for six to eight weeks.  He was with the Minnesota Twins since the middle of the 2009 season, but last season he was unable to pitch after June 1 because of a right shoulder injury.

Pavano went just 2-5 with a 6.00 ERA for the Twins last season.

Before the injury, it was believed that the New York Mets and Colorado Rockies were showing interest in the 37-year-old Pavano.

Rockies Want Jason Giambi to Retire and Join Coaching Staff

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- The Colorado Rockies decided to hire Walt Weiss as their new manager instead of Jason Giambi, who's been playing for the team for the past three-plus seasons. The Rockies though, would still like Giambi to join the team's coaching staff if he retires.

Despite no managerial experience, the 41-year old Giambi was a serious candidate for the job. While he has said he would like to keep playing if he didn't get the job, he may reconsider his position. Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd would like to bring Giambi on as the team's hitting coach.

"We consider him a Rockie, we hope this is a spot he will consider," O'Dowd told the Denver Post. "He was very impressive in his interview for hte managerial job."

Giambi would likely have to sign with another team if he decides to play a 19th season in Major League Baseball.

The 2000 American League MVP, Giambi has hit 429 career home runs during his time with the Athletics, Yankees, and Rockies.

Walt Weiss Taking Over as Rockies Skipper

Ron Vesely/MLB Photos via Getty Images(DENVER) -- The Colorado Rockies hired former major league shortstop Walt Weiss as their new manager Wednesday night.

Weiss takes over the job from Jim Tracy, who resigned Oct. 7 with one-year left on a contract that would have payed him $1.4 million next season.

Last season, Weiss coached his son at Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, Colorado, leading the team to the state championship.

Weiss beat out Diamondbacks third base coach Matt Williams for the job.

Weiss played four seasons for the Rockies in the mid-nineties and was the 1988 American League Rookie of the Year. In his 14-year career he hit .258, with 623 runs scored and 386 RBIs.

Jason Giambi Is a Serious Candidate for Rockies Manager

Doug Pensinger/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- He may not even be officially retired yet, but the Colorado Rockies are considering first baseman Jason Giambi to be their next manager, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post.

According to Renck, Giambi "remains a candidate for the Rockies manager job until he's ruled out."

Jim Tracy recently resigned as the team's manager after a 64-98 season, which was one of the worst in franchise history. Giambi is expected to interview for the position with team officials at some point over the next week.

Even though Giambi has never been a manager on any level, he has served as a team leader as well as mentor for the young Rockies player. Renck says that Giambi has spent the past three seasons as a "coach-in-training."

The 41-year old Giambi has spent the past three seasons with the Rockies, primarily as a bench player. He has said to have been a positive influence on the clubhouse and could be a successful manager based off the relationship he has with players.

The former 2000 American League MVP hit .225 with one home run in 60 games with the Rockies this past season.

Rockies Manager Jim Tracy Resigns

Joe Robbins/Getty Images(DENVER) -- After another poor season, Jim Tracy has resigned as the manager of the Colorado Rockies.

This past season, the Rockies set a franchise futility-mark, going 64-98. The team ranked sixth in Major League Baseball in runs scored, but dead last in team ERA.

Tracy took over for the clubs during the 2009 season, and led them to just their third postseason appearance in franchise history. Since that 2009 season, the team's record has deteriorated each following season. The team won 83 games in 2010, 73 in 2011, and then 64 in Tracy's final season with the team.

"He is truly respected inside our clubhouse and I hoped he would be with us so we he could help us improve and have a better season in 2013," outfielder Carlos Gonzalez told the Denver Post. "Sadly, we had one of the worst seasons in franchise and when these things happen our jobs are at stake."

The Rockies are the fourth team to change managers since the regular season ended.
