Cavs Ink Irving to Extension

Chris Chambers/Getty Images(CLEVELAND) -- Even the potential of luring LeBron James back could not prevent the Cleveland Cavaliers from making a major signing. On Thursday, the Cavs made it official by signing point guard Kyrie Irving to a five-year, $90 million extension.

While the agreement was reached last week, Cleveland could not publicly confirm the deal until the NBA's moratorium on free agency ended on Thursday. The new contract keeps Irving in a Cavaliers jersey through 2020.

"We are excited that Kyrie has officially committed to be here long term with the Cleveland Cavaliers," owner Dan Gilbert said in a release. "The future has never been brighter as we are building the team and franchise for sustainable success. Kyrie is obviously a very big piece of our plan."

The three-year veteran averaged 20.8 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.6 rebounds last year for Cleveland. Irving was also named the Most Valuable Player at the NBA All-Star Game.

Cavaliers Win First Pick in 2013 NBA Draft

Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- For the second time in three seasons, the Cleveland Cavaliers have won the NBA Draft Lottery.

The Cav's had a 15.6% chance of winning the lottery, the third best of any team. The Orlando Magic had the best chance and ended up with the second pick.

This is the fourth time since 1985 the Cavaliers have won the lottery, the most of any team in the NBA.

It's been three seasons since the Cavaliers lost superstar LeBron James to the Miami Heat. Since then it's been a rebuilding process, one that Gilbert hopes is over after this draft.

“We were hoping, regardless of what pick we got, that this would be our last lottery,” Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said. “We thought originally, after everything had to be reset, that it would be a three-year process. You never know. It could be two or it could be four. But we thought three years. With the No. 1 pick this year, and we also have No. 19, we think this will be the last Lottery for a while.”

The projected number one pick in the 2013 draft is Kentucky center Nerlens Noel.

Cleveland finished 24-58 under Byron Scott this season, which led to his firing last week.

Brown coached the Cavaliers from 2008-2010 and led them to back-to-back 60 win seasons before being let go.
