Jets QB David Garrard Says He Is Leaving the Team

NFL Via Getty Images(NEW YORK) --  After just two months with the team, quarterback David Garrard is leaving the New York Jets because of swelling in his knee.

"Having to call it quits. My knee is not holding up. Continuing to swell after practices. Limiting what I can do," Garrard wrote in a text message to SiriusXM radio host Adam Schein on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Garrard was signed by the Jets in March to compete with Mark Sanchez.  He has not played in an NFL game in over two years due to various injuries but was looking forward to the opportunity to win the starting job.

The Jets are now down to four quarterbacks on the roster.  They drafted Geno Smith in the second round of the NFL draft to compete with Sanchez.  Greg McElroy and Matt Simms are there as well and are looking to compete.  The team released Tim Tebow two weeks ago.

"This will be a bona fide quarterback competition. Period," new offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said on a conference call with season-ticket holders. "I'm hoping that somebody will rise to the top quicker rather than later."

Dolphins Cut QB David Garrard

NFL via Getty Images(MIAMI) -- The Dolphins released Pro Bowl quarterback David Garrard on Tuesday, leaving Matt Moore as their backup.  Miami will begin the season with rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill under center.

The 34-year-old Garrard signed with the Dolphins last March and was installed as their starting quarterback. During the pre-season, Garrard went down with a left knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery.

The Dolphins selected Tannehill out of Texas A&M with the eighth overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.

Dolphins Name Ryan Tannehill Starting Quarterback

Joel Auerbach/Getty Images(MIAMI) -- The Miami Dolphins announced on Monday that rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill will be starting under center for the team’s season opener against the Houston Texans. He edged out last season’s starter, Matt Moore.

The Dolphins selected Tannehill out of Texas A&M with the eighth overall pick in this year’s NFL draft. During his career with the Aggies, the 24-year-old was named first-team academic all-Big 12 three times.

David Garrard was set to begin the season as the Dolphins' starting quarterback, but he has been sidelined since undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery earlier this month.

Dolphins Quarterback David Garrard to Undergo Knee Surgery

NFL via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- After missing all of last season, quarterback David Garrard was attempting to become the starting quarterback of the Miami Dolphins, but that likely won't happen now as Garrard will miss the next 2-4 weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Because of the timetable for Garrard's return, the starting job will either go to Matt Moore or rookie Ryan Tannehill. Garrard's knee had been bothering him as of late, and thought it'd be better to have the surgery now as opposed to dealing with it all season.

"Nothing happened. Just 'father time,' wear and tear," Garrard told FoxSports.com. "They have to take out loose things floating around."

"He had been feeling some soreness, and he got it looked at," Garrard's agent, Al Irby said. "He could have played on it, but they'd rather do the surgery now to make him more comfortable, rather than fool around with it."

The 34-year old Garrard spent nine seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars before signing with the Dolphins during the offseason. He missed all of last season recovering from back surgery.

Dolphins Agree to deal with Ryan Tannehill

Joel Auerbach/Getty Images(DAVIE, FLORIDA) -- The Miami Dolphins agreed to terms with quarterback Ryan Tannehill, the former Texas A&M quarterback drafted eighth overall in April's NFL Draft

Tannehill was forced to hold out at the start of training camp because his team was not yet completed.  Tannehill did not want to miss any more time as he wanted to join his teammates and get to work.

Tannehill had already missed the first two days of camp and is expected to compete for the starting job along with veterans Matt Moore and David Garrard.

Terms of the contract were not announced.  Tannehill started 19 games at Texas A&M and his head coach was Mike Sherman, who is now the offensive coordinator for the Dolphins.

Tannehill is the first quarterback picked in the first round by the Dolphins since drafting Hall of Fame Dan Marino back in 1983.

Garrard Signs One-Year Deal With Dolphins

Thinkstock(MIAMI) -- Free agent quarterback David Garrard and the Miami Dolphins agreed to a one-year deal on Monday.

The Dolphins were hoping to land Peyton Manning, but with the announcement yesterday that he is headed to Denver, Miami told Garrard he would have a shot at starting.

The Dolphins also spoke with free agent quarterback Alex Smith this past weekend.

"They didn't say for sure they were bringing another guy in, but they said it's a possibility, whether in the draft or whatever," Garrard said in a phone interview.

The Dolphins were impressed after Garrard's workout on Monday, which led to the signing.
